New table with a breakdown of the covered bond-holding sectors

A new table (table 22.34Opens in new window) has been added to the financial markets section with a breakdown of the covered bond-holding sectors, to add to the information currently published on other portfolios: Treasury bills (table 22.3Opens in new window), government bonds (table 22.4Opens in new window), regional government debt securities (table 22.31Opens in new window), securitisation bonds and commercial papers (table 22.33Opens in new window), and IBEX 35 shares (table 22.32Opens in new window).

The new table includes a breakdown by holding sectors of covered bonds issued by credit institutions (mortgage covered bonds, public-sector covered bonds and internationalisation covered bonds).

Characteristics of the new table

  • The time series for these new statistics run from December 2020.
  • They are published monthly with a 52-day time lag.
  • The holdings are valued at their nominal amount.
  • Securities issued in Spain by resident issuers are included.
  • As in the rest of the portfolio statistics, the data sources used draw on the information on securities portfolios provided by the holders themselves (in the case of much of the financial sector) or by depositories (for the remaining holding agents).
  • This information is currently received in accordance with the rules established in Regulation (EU) No 1011/2012 of the European Central Bank concerning statistics on holdings of securities.
